So you may be wondering what is the difference between a dermatologist and esthetician? Dermatologists and estheticians are skin care professionals. Study.com states, “The key distinction is that dermatologists are medical doctors and qualified to diagnose and treat medical conditions that affect the skin.  Estheticians concentrate on the skin’s appearance and may use facials or other treatments to improve the skin’s appearance or care for problems such as acne.”

Dermatologists must obtain a medical degree ( 8 years of college) in order to practice. They can treat a variety of skin disorders and conduct surgical treatments as well.  Estheticians must complete the hour requirement by state and receive a license to be able to practice.

Dermatologists can treat medical conditions of the skin

Most of the time,  you will return to your dermatologist to either refill a prescription or if you’re receiving medical treatments. While estheticians can administer many of the same professional skincare treatments as dermatologists such as microneedling and dermaplaning, estheticians are not permitted to prescribe acne prescriptions or conduct botox injections and fillers.

Estheticians are trained to help treat the appearance of skin

Skinpen.com states, “Estheticians may work in spas, salons or medical settings under the direction of dermatologists.” You get the benefit of receiving a personalized skincare regimen when you visit an esthetician.. Some of the treatments estheticians can perform include extractions, waxing, dermaplaning, microneedling and Intense pulse light/lasers to treat a variety of issues. They also have a variety of facials that can treat many skin concerns such as acne or hyperpigmentation.
