How to Create a Smokey Eye For Beginners
We all want to get that perfect smokey eye for a special event. It’s always fun to pick out a lovely dress and get dolled up; I mean who wouldn’t want the excuse to!!
So you go on Google to try to find your local makeup artist to glam you up, however, there is one problem—SHE’S BOOKED!!! Or maybe, you want to save $$ and create the look for less. Don’t fret…I have some tips on how to achieve that smoky eye look you always desired all from the convenience of your home. So sit back and take notes and let’s get started.
Start with an eye base.
Shop Urban Decay Eyeshadow Primer Potion (For oily lids) HERE
It’s very crucial to promote longevity of your eye makeup by wearing an eye shadow primer. There are so many on the market but my favorite is Urban Decay Eyeshadow Potion. If you have eyelid discoloration, there are different shade options to help neutralize that such as yellow based tints.
Make sure you pat it gently on to your eyelids with your ring finger and let it dry before applying your eye shadow. Smashbox 24-Hour Shadow Primer holds my shadow in place all day, with no creasing, fading or color changes. Even under my eyes!!!
Apply a Medium Eyeshadow Shade First
The second step to apply a light-medium shade eye shadow on your eyelids. You don’t want to go too dark as this can make the eyes appear smaller or more hooded if you have hooded eyes. I love to opt for shimmery shades, especially for an event as this adds a bit of glam and emphasis to the eyes.
Matte shades are preferable if you have hooded eyes.
Shimmery eye shadow will draw emphasis and attention to the eyelid and highlight the area, so if your eyes are hooded you want to avoid this by all means and stick with matte tones.
I love Tarte Toasted Eyeshadow Palette for this look because it is versatile with lots of warm matte and shimmery shades to choose from. The shades are pigmented and theres a variety of warm tones to choose from. Perfect for every day looks or a mokey eye!
Third Step is to apply the Darkest Shade to the Outer V
The third step is to apply the darkest shade in your eye shadow palette to the outer v of your eye.
Make sure to blend, blend, and blend!!! You want this look to appear as clean as possible to avoid any harsh lines. If you have trouble creating the outer V, a top tip of mine is to use tape and apply it from the corner of your bottom lash line to the end of your eyebrow as a guideline.
Add Gel or Liquid Eyeliner
The fourth step is to add eyeliner on the top and/or bottom of your eyes. I typically use gel liner for the top of the eyelid with an angled eyeliner brush and slightly wing it out for a dramatic cat eye effect. If you prefer subtle eyeliner look, you can smudge the liner on your lash line and not do a wing. It’s all your preference, so have fun with it and do what looks best for your eye shape!
Add a Volumizing Mascara
SHOP BAD GIRL BANG MASCARA HERE
The last step is to curl your lashes and apply mascara. I recommend curling your lashes first, to avoid the lash curler sticking to your lashes. Then I prefer to use a volumizing mascara for that extra glam effect.
Benefit’s Bad Girl Bang Mascara gives the illusion of dramatic black lashes and doesn’t budge. You have to try it out for yourself! If you’re looking for an amazing lash serum to help grow fuller lashes, then GrandeLash MD Enhancing Serum is the one!
