Do you ever find yourself stumbling in the cleanser aisle wondering whether you should choose a cream or oil-based cleanser? Or what about the double cleansing method…you may be wondering what the hype about that is about!
FACIAL CLEANSING IS THE FIRST STEP IN THE SKINCARE ROUTINE
Facial cleansing is the first and most important step in the skincare routine and can make a great impact to the overall difference in your skin. Today I am going to educate you about the difference between using an oil and cream cleanser and what double cleansing really means. Double cleansing can make a world of a difference when it comes to cleansing your face.
DON’T BELIEVE EVERYTHING YOU SEE ON PINTEREST
Often times, there is miscommunication when it comes to cleansers and skincare in general. It makes me sad when I see information being put out on Pinterest or by random influencers. Most of the beauty advice you see online is by influencers that do not have skincare expertise. Often times, the information you read out there isn’t always accurate, and thus you can end up damaging your skin.

Cream versus oil based cleansers
I find that cream cleansers are ideal if you suffer from dry or sensitive skin;, Oil-based cleansers help break up oil and debris effectively for all skin types. Just make sure you do your research to determine what oil based cleanser is safe and gentle..
Safe oils in skincare
Before you start panicking about oil, I want to mention there ARE safe oils out there. Non-comedogenic oils include jojoba, tea-tree and marula. Comedongenic oils include coconut oil, shea butter, cocoa butter. So by all means—please steer clear from coconut oil and do not apply it to your face. Keep that to moisturize your body instead.
WHAT IS DOUBLE CLEANSING?

Double cleansing is important to help remove makeup completely. It is the process of cleaning your face twice:
1. You use an oil based cleanser 2. Use an oil-based cleanser. This method will break down any makeup, dirt, or excess oils from your skin and ensure smoother skin.
If you have oily skin or sensitive skin, you can use oil-based cleansers that contain the safe ingredients I mentioned above. If you want to avoid oil based cleansers, there are micellar waters you can use to help carefully remove your makeup followed by your regular cleanser. This ensures all traces of dirt, oil and makeup are removed properly.
Try: Simple Micellar Facial Gel Wash
Simple’s Water Boost Micellar Facial Gel Wash is a gel form of micellar water, and it’s suitable for normal to dry or combination skin, including sensitive skin types. It’s a gentle, fragrance-free cleanser that can be used to cleanse the face alone or before your cleanser to thoroughly deep clean your face.
Double cleansing is beneficial if you live or work in an area that is polluted since toxins from the environment can clog your pores. Keep in mind, however, if your skin is sensitive, just using a gentle cleanser twice can be a gentler approach and safer for acne-prone skin that doesn’t tolerate oils well.
PROPER WAY TO USE CLEANSER
When it comes to cleansing your face, there is a right and wrong way to cleanse. I always tell everyone to wash their hands before applying cleanser so you can ensure all traces of bacteria are removed from your hands. Massage the cleanser into your face for at least 60 second to thoroughly remove dirt, oil, and toxins from your pores. Be sure to use a clean towel to pat your face dry.
ALWAYS CLEANSE WITH WARM WATER
Please do not use hot water on your face! This will only irritate and dry out your skin more. Oh, and the idea that using cold water will close your pores is just a myth! Cold water will only shock your skin and irritate it more. Warm water is effective for all skin types and will get the job done.
USE THE APPROPRIATE CLEANSER FOR YOUR SKIN TYPE
The most important thing to consider when selecting a cleanser is your skin type. Make sure you understand your skin’s threshold and which ingredients work best for your skin. I mean the biggest mistake you can be making is using the wrong formula for your skin! Imagine using a cleanser with oils on acne-prone skin—this is a recipe for DISASTER.
Make sure you use gentle cleansers that are appropriate for your skin type. Avoid harsh scrubs or irritating ingredients like dyes, fragrances, and sodium lauryl sulfate . You can read all about the appropriate types of cleansers for your skin type HERE.
USE A GENTLE CLEANSING DEVICE
If you want a deeper clean then I reccomend trying QYKSONIC’s ZOE BLISS sonic cleanser. It is safe for all skin types and is morre effective at cleaning your skin in comparison to your hands alone and makeup remover wipes.
Another benefit of using Zoe Bliss’s versatile 3-in-1 anti-aging sonic beauty dfevice that effectively cleanses, massages, and applies your skincare products. What I loved about this device in comparison to my Clarisonic Brush, is that you don’t have to keep changing the brush heads (which can get very expensive over time.
