Here is a list of 7 reasons your acne treatment may not be working:

⚡️1. Not using an acne regimen for your skin type -If your skin is dry and your using drying gels with high concentrations such as Benzoyl Peroxide 10%- you are only drying and irritating your skin more.

⚡️2. Giving up too soon Remember skinaare products take time to work. Verywellhealth.com says, “Depending on the medication you are using, it can take at few weeks before you really start to notice an improvement in your skin, and it can take up to three months longer to see clearing.” Don’t give up too soon! If you stop treatment before that time period, you are not giving your skin time to fully adjust and shed old dead skin.

⚡️3. Applying the wrong amountBe sure to follow the directions on the back of the label to be able to know how much of the treatment to apply. If you’re still not sure, consult with your dermatologist or esthetician (or whomever prescribed the acne treatment). Using the wrong concentration of your acne treatment can affect your results.

⚡️4. Clogged poresYou must wash your face prior to applying any skincare product. Clogged pores will make it difficult for your treatments to absorb into the pores and clear your skin, make sure you are using an appropriate cleanser for your skin type.  If you are not sure, then read my article about cleansers for your skin type HERE.

⚡️5. Stressful lifestyleToo much stress will cause more breakouts and irritate your skin more than what you started with. No acne treatment can prevent further breakouts completely if you’re not managing stress in your life. Things like yoga, exercise, and facials can help relax you when dealing with stress. Also be sure to get at least 7-8 hours of rest.

⚡️6. Not applying moisturizerYou should always apply moisturizer after your treatments (or before if your skin is really dry) to prevent dryness/peeling from your acne treatments. Your skin will also be protected by applying the proper moisturizer for your skin type.

⚡️7. Not applying sunscreenYou MUST apply sunscreen everyday even if you only apply your treatments at night. “Using broad-spectrum sunscreen daily will protect your skin from premature aging, hyperpigmentation, and skin cancer” (Verywellhealth.com).

Keep in mind, you should apply your acne spot treatment all over your face where you experience breakouts to prevent new spots from forming! Picking at your skin willl only cause more breakouts. There are a variety of acne treatments used to treat acne such as benzoyl peroxide for bacteria or and prescription retinoids for moderate to cystic acne. A dermatologist to discover what treatment is best for your skin type.
